# reCAPTCHA image grids

> How to send reCAPTCHA v2 image challenges (3x3, 4x4 and 1x1 tiles) and how to read the answer.

Use `recaptcha` for the image challenges of reCAPTCHA v2: 3x3 grids, 4x4 grids, and the single tiles that appear after a click.

## What to send

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `task` | The instruction text that the user reads, for example `Select all images with buses`. Send the full sentence. |
| `grid` | `3x3`, `4x4` or `1x1`. |
| `image_data` | Base64 pictures. For `3x3` and `4x4` send one picture of the whole grid. For `1x1` send 1 to 9 tile pictures. |

```json
{
  "task": "Select all images with buses",
  "grid": "3x3",
  "image_data": ["BASE64_GRID"]
}
```

## What you get

The answer has one boolean per tile. `true` means: select this tile. Tiles run left to right, top to bottom. For `1x1` the answer has one boolean per picture you sent.

```json
{"data": [false, true, false, true, true, false, false, false, false]}
```

In a 3x3 grid the tiles are numbered like this. The answer above selects tiles 2, 4 and 5.

```
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
```

## Dynamic grids

Some challenges replace a tile with a new picture after you click it. Send each new tile as a `1x1` job, with the same task text. The [browser extension](https://solvecha.com/docs/browser-extension.md) does this for you.

## Tell us what Google said

After you submit the answer, Google accepts or rejects it. Send the verdict with [Send feedback](https://solvecha.com/docs/api/send-feedback.md). It is optional, costs no quota and helps us improve the models.

## Accuracy

On a hand-checked test set of 453 challenges (October 2026) the model gets 98 % of the image cells right: 97.9 % for 1x1, 98.0 % for 3x3 and 97.5 % for 4x4. On Google's public reCAPTCHA demo, 99.7 % of user sessions got a token within up to 3 fresh challenges (299 of 300 sessions, 17 October 2026, one data-center IP). Other sites, IP addresses and settings can differ. The method and the raw numbers are on the [compare page](https://solvecha.com/compare).
